The Box is Plymouth’s major museum, gallery and archive, bringing collections, contemporary art and learning together in one landmark cultural space at the heart of the city. The team approached us to refresh the brand identity so the experience of finding and visiting The Box felt as confident and contemporary as the building and programme itself.

Create a memorable mark

The core brief was to refresh the brand identity for The Box Plymouth and create a memorable mark that helps people quickly locate The Box, both visually and verbally, and feel confident they’ve arrived somewhere special. Working alongside creative partner David Smith at Just Enough Brave, and The Box’s internal team, the aim was to deliver a flexible identity that could work just as hard on the street as it does across print, digital and learning materials.

This was a genuinely collaborative project. We worked closely with the internal team, including Abigail Netcott, Jo Clarke and Fiona Booth, to stress‑test the refreshed identity across the museum, gallery, archive and learning offer. Together, we developed clear tools and templates so every department could easily adopt the new look without losing consistency.

The creative solution

The refreshed identity centres on a bold, confident mark and a bright visual language designed to be seen at a distance and recognised at a glance. The system scales from wayfinding, banners and façades on North Hill and Tavistock Place through to ticketing, learning resources and digital communications, ensuring visitors encounter a coherent experience well before they reach the building.

As the new creative rolls out across the city, The Box Plymouth is able to project a stronger, more visible presence as a place for people, art, ideas and experiences. For a cultural space that already stands out architecturally, the refreshed identity helps it claim its place in the cityscape and makes it easier for residents and visitors to spot, navigate and share.
